Red Kites:
Sheila says: “I have ‘adopted’ a Red Kite and would like to hear from anyone spotting this bird.” The Kite can be identified by the wings tags..........black, purple N6 (see below with its sibling)

Sheilas Kite Black Purple N6

Above: Fledgling ‘N6’ from 2007. Tagged at a Shropshire nest, one of several proving the spread of the Welsh ‘flock’ into the English border counties.
For more info on Red Kite wing tags and how to report your sightings go to the Welsh Kite Trust at:

Kite Wing Tags:
The colour of the tag on the left wing denotes the area in which they were marked/released and the colour on the right wing denotes the year in which  it fledged. On a perched bird only one side may be visible so a small bar of colour at the bottom of the tag informs the observer of the colour of the tag on the opposite wing.

Portugal Feb 2011 14002

Left:  Individual birds are often ringed for scientific study: Here are Spoonbills and Egrets we spotted in Portugal and several had leg rings that we reported via the internet.

Birds with Leg Rings:

Often seen on pigeons, but less on truly wild birds, we sometimes spot rings on birds and sometimes even manage to read the letters and numbers with the telescope or binoculars. The rings a fitted either when the bird is young in the nest or later when caught in a special ringer’s mist net. They are only ever useful if the ring details are read and sent to the people running the investigation. The link below will take you to the correct place to report a ringed bird - even if the bird is found dead, the details of where, when and what other information you can give will be very much appreciated.  With the large plastic leg or neck rings, always note the colour of the ring too and if there are a group of coloured rings the position of the rings is also important.
